Biography:

Carter Shappy is an emerging printmaker, installation artist and Vermont native currently living and working in Portland, Maine where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maine College of Art. He is the print shop manager at Running with Scissors Artist Studios located in East Bayside, Portland where his studio practice is also situated.

Shappy's work is inspired by his interests in natural phenomena, perception, psychedelia and everyday, mundane experience. Though working in a variety of mediums, he is frequently drawn to printmaking processes and their sculptural potential in multi-sensory installations. Many of his small and large prints are apart of private collections in Maine, Vermont and Florida.

Recent projects include a collaborative art and science residency with the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences—an international ocean biogeochemistry research facility located in East Boothbay, Maine. Shappy proposed and co-organized to be the laboratories first artist in residence. For four months he worked closely with Senior Research Scientist, Dr. Steve Archer translating Archer’s research on ocean acidification and gas exchange into a two-story printed installation. The installation, Colorcosm, has been on view at the laboratory headquarters since July, 2016.
