Artist Statement:

Dulce Maria Garcia explores Afro-Latin identity and the intersectionality of Latin and Afro cultures through paintings. Lack of diversity drives her work, which can be seen in her investigations of Latin and American television and pop culture. She explores these themes through figurative, portraiture, black pigment and minimalist abstractions. The abstraction as well as her figurative work creates space for representations. In her Thesis Work Complex Identities she uses Science Fiction Female Icons and Monochromatic Black Minimalist paintings to bring awareness to Afro Latin and Black representation.
