Major: Graphic Design

Graduation Year: 2021

Artist Statement:

My work is a multimedia expression of my feelings and an exploration of my trauma and personal experiences. I work with various materials including design, collage, paint, and found objects based on the emotions I am experiencing and how my intuition tells me to process them artistically. I work with a focus on the making process instead of the outcome as the act of creating is for me in itself very therapeutic. I participate in “thinking through making”in order to connect to my materials and myself on a deeply personal level.

Biography:

Riley Allen was raised in Roy, UT in an airforce family and spent the majority of her childhood moving back and forth between Utah and Maine. She is currently a senior at Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. Riley transferred to MECA in 2019 from Central Maine Community College for graphic design after attaining her AAS in Graphic Communications, but ultimately ended up doing what she was most passionate about and that was art therapy. Riley holds great passion for working to heal her generational trauma so the people that come after her can live a better life. Riley hopes to someday go to school to get her master’s degree as a trauma informed Art Therapist so she can someday help others in the way that she has helped herself following trauma and adversity through art.
