Description

My thesis concept is metamorphosis. The piece exhibits how the transformation of my mind and heart are reflected physically in my art.

The heritage I'm beginning to discover combined with the hardships I've gone through in the last two years, have changed me fundamentally. I was adopted from Guatemala the year the Guatemalan Civil War ended. I was adopted by an all white family, raised in an all white town, then came to college in Maine, a state with a 94% white population. While I was aware that I was different, it wasn't acknowledged for 24 plus years of my life, much less celebrated. That newfound awareness, is something I'm striving to celebrate and incorporate into my everyday life, art included.

With the hindsight of my recent struggle came sudden foresight of my self. Even as I am just starting this reformation of character, my art is changing drastically. While integrating craft techniques and applied material, I want to simultaneously see myself in what I create. My thesis distinctly showcases self discovery, transition and the relationship between the two. I designed two bodies that encompassed the transition between fine furniture to art furniture.

The pieces face each other, completely identical in make, yet they do not naturally reflect one another. The natural wood on body one is clean and organic. The milk paint and hand made sand on body two are bold, modern and culturally significant to me. Both designs are valuable. Both are reflections of me.
