Excavation/Residue Part 2

Description

This continuing body of work--from fall semester 2021--is all about building up and excavating. Several pieces were created by laminating painted paper upwards of a hundred layers thick, followed by much digging and excavation—creating colorful, textural, three-dimensional assemblages. In the process, I made use of the dug up, the leftover, the castoff, and the reconsidered—whether stacks of reused shop towels, recycled cardboard, or scraps of paper excavated from other pieces.

I am motivated by texture and the tactility of my materials. In turn, I want viewers to want to touch my paintings, to feel their texture, to peer into the depth of their many layers, and to consider the layers of being and meaning in not just this work but ultimately in themselves.
