Using various forms of word-play I seek to blur the line between absurd and dignified by juxtaposing juvenile, low-brow concepts with sophisticated, meticulous drawing techniques.
Maxwell Arthur Erwin is a 25 year old illustrator from Portland, Maine who specializes in graphic pen and ink images which blend humor and the macabre. Growing up in a Portland suburb, Maxwell began to take an interest in early horror movies and developed a taste for hair-raising subject matter, camp humor and the high contrast of black and white movies. He soon began to create his own works following the subject matter in film, painting and music, trying to get to the root of what made these subjects so appealing. Recently Maxwell has began to include more tongue in cheek humor into his inkings and tries to blur the line between humor and horror. He is currently enrolled in the illustration department at the Maine College of Art.
