As an aspiring concept artist, my goal is to create characters and craft stories through my illustrations that form a connection with the viewer. The aspect of my craft that I mostly concentrate on is character design. It is the facet of narrative based art that I have always been most drawn towards. Speaking visually, I aim to create expressive and dynamic characters that are distinct in appearance, but also reflect the internal attributes they possess. For thesis, it was my original intention to work with a set of characters I had created previously. However, I realized I was straying into passion project territory, and as a result would be resistant in taking criticism or making necessary changes. So I decided to start with a new story, allowing myself to try something different, working within a genre I hadn’t previously, and aiming for a broad range of characters to help diversify my portfolio. This was an important opportunity for me, as in the past I had become too comfortable relying of my older characters, dampening my creativity. The overall goal has been to create a thesis project that is the high point of my current professional portfolio.
