Description

For as long as I can remember, I have been attracted to and intrigued by the genre of horror. As a child I would do anything I could to get a taste of the horror films my parents hid from my naive eyes and would stay up late in the night, terrified by the glimpses I got of monsters and demons. As petrified as I was on those dark and fearful nights, deep down I always thought there was something funny about being scared by fictional creatures and I wanted to know why I kept seeking out more nightmares. This interest in the macabre has followed me through my entire life. Early in my youth I found it was no longer good enough for me to just watch these horrific creations take life on page or screen and decided I needed to be a part of it. I have been trying to find my place within horror and art ever since. Using primarily pen and ink I strive to create high contrast, subversive imagery that is equally repulsive and humorous. I use word play, pop culture references and genre tropes to take a familiar object or concept and flip it on itâ??s head. My imagery is saturated with intricate black dot work, cross hatching and fine line work that helps push my low brow concepts further and shows great care in my renderings of these often juvenile subjects.

Artist Statement:

Maxwell Arthur Erwin is a 25 year old illustrator from Portland, Maine who specializes in graphic pen and ink images which blend humor and the macabre. Growing up in a Portland suburb, Maxwell began to take an interest in early horror movies and developed a taste for hair-raising subject matter, camp humor and the high contrast of black and white movies. He soon began to create his own works following the subject matter in film, painting and music, trying to get to the root of what made these subjects so appealing. Recently Maxwell has began to include more tongue in cheek humor into his inkings and tries to blur the line between humor and horror. He is currently enrolled in the illustration department at the Maine College of Art.
