Description

Perfect Order is a series of paintings depicting anonymous human figures taking on the roles and behaviors of animals that live in matriarchal societies. This project playfully demonstrates dominance hierarchies that subvert stereotypes of masculinity, legitimize feminine authority, and challenge commonly assigned gender roles. Species studied for these works include the Western Honeybee (Apis Mellifera), the Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion Ocellaris), the African Lion (Panthera Leo), the Australian Redback Spider (Lactrodectus Hasselti), and the Laughing Hyena (Crocuta Crocuta).

Artist Statement:

Inspired by the historic tradition of allegorical painting, my work depicts figures in
ambiguous situations as a way of exploring the strange, nebulous rules of human
behavior. I intend my paintings to be both quiet and disquieting, using obscurity,
tension, and a sparse use of representational space to investigate the emptiness of social constructs. Specifically, my work aims to raise questions about how gender-related expectations are defined and disrupted.
