Projection of Memories

Description

In this installation, a video part was projecting onto a large white sheet that I sewed together using many tiny scraps of fabric and lace. The sheet had holes and parts missing here and there so the video projection shines through onto the wall and ceiling behind. I added two box fans in different places of the room to create movement throughout the fabric pieces, the loose strands of fabric flow in the air. The important part about this piece is that the projector is constantly playing the fragmented movie. I made a short two minute series of short clipped together videos on imovie. The videos were all taken in the recent years of my life and were all individually holding recollections. The sounds recorded were the types of sounds you hear on a whim, something you hear so fast that it echoes in your head a few times and then it's gone forever. All of the short two to seven second clipped videos mashed together made up for a particular overwhelming feeling these memories had. The only way I could communicate was through remnants, never whole because there will always be pieces missing.

Artist Statement:

Through layered watercolor, stitched-together fabric scraps, overlapped projection video and sound, I have been interested in showing disintegration of the past and attachment to memories, feelings and personal family histories. How these recollections make up who we are as individual people and the connections we have to where and who we come from. These ideas evolve into an interest in time-travel, the study of wear and time, and discovering new connections in the fragmentations found throughout our lives.
